FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Adelaide 2025 Commits to Advancing Sustainability with Dedicated Action Plan
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Adelaide 2025 has appointed Luke van Kempen, Advisory Services Director at 54 to lead the development and delivery of the event’s Sustainability Action Plan.
54 is a global advisory and events agency with its Australian headquarters in Adelaide. With extensive experience delivering major events across South Australia, 54 brings valuable local expertise to the global stage, helping to shape a sustainability blueprint that can guide future FIVB events around the world.
The Sustainability Action Plan, acts as a framework to ensure the Championships are delivered with minimal environmental impact and lasting community benefit.
The Plan focuses on resource efficiency, waste reduction, local supplier engagement and maximum community impact.
Key sustainability initiatives include:
Smart Venue Design
Utilising existing infrastructure at The Drive to reduce its environmental footprint, with sand used across the competition courts to be repurposed post-event.
Sustainable Transport
Encouraging active and public transport, with bicycle parking available for fans and nearby public transport connections promoted. Athletes and officials are accommodated within walking distance of the venue to reduce transport requirements.
Waste Reduction
In partnership with Closed Loop, a leader in circular economy solutions, the event will implement waste minimisation systems and integrate recycled and reusable materials throughout the venue and festival precinct. Fans are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles, with refill stations available on site.
Supporting the Community
Through the partnership with The Hidden Sea, The Official Wine partner, we estimate 76,000 bottles of plastic will be removed from the ocean.
Local and Ethical Catering
All catering partners are local South Australian suppliers, sourcing ingredients that are seasonal and sustainable. An innovative approach to athlete and official catering will also reduce food waste and support local restaurants.
Site Protection
Working in partnership with the Adelaide City Council, a Site Protection and Restoration Plan will ensure Pinky Flat is fully restored following the Championships.
Responsible Procurement
Suppliers engaged by the event are selected for their strong environmental and ethical standards, ensuring procurement decisions align with the event’s sustainability goals.
Luke van Kempen, Advisory Services Director at 54 stated; “I’m proud to be part of a team that’s showing how a global sporting event can be both spectacular and sustainable. Together, the FIVB and the Local Organising Committee are making a meaningful commitment to sustainability, embracing a circular approach that reuses resources, supports local communities, and leaves a positive legacy long after the event.”
The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), who themselves are taking action to shape a sustainable future – for people, for the planet, for volleyball, are working alongside Adelaide 2025. Speaking about their collaboration, Paulo Barone, Head of Sustainability and Development at the FIVB stated; “At the FIVB, we see sustainability as a shared responsibility built on collaboration and accountability. Together with the Adelaide 2025 Organising Committee, we are working to reduce the event’s environmental footprint while maximising its social and community benefits. By measuring our impact and reporting transparently, we aim to turn insights into action and set higher standards for the future. Over time, our major events should be both high-performance and responsible – leaving a lasting, positive legacy.”
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Adelaide 2025 aim to demonstrate how global sporting events can be both spectacular and sustainable, setting a new standard for future Beach Volleyball events held globally.
