AUSSIE YOUNG GUNS FLEMING/FEJES SECURE ROUND OF 32 BERTH AT FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

It was an all Aussie affair on centre court at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships today, with Aussie young guns Jasmine Fleming and Stefie Fejes securing their spot in the Round of 32 after defeating team mates Georgia Johnson and Lizzie Alchin.

World Championships debutants Fleming and Fejes secured the victory in three sets (19-21, 21-17, 15-12).

With family and friends watching on, Fleming and Fejes said they are proud of today’s win and looking forward to the next round of the World Championships.

“We’re super excited [to be through to the Round of 32], we love playing here, we love playing at this stadium and we love playing against some of the best teams in the world,” Fleming said.

“So we’re just excited to keep having fun and to play our best volleyball,” she said.

“It’s so special, normally I look out to the camera and go ‘I love you guys, miss you’, and my friends and family know that I’m talking to them, but actually having them out there in the crowd is so special, I love it,” Fejes said.

“I mean it’s incredible [to have six Australian females through to the Lucky Losers], everyday we push each other harder and harder.

“We’ve been travelling the world for the past year… so qualifying four teams has been so amazing and then to see all of us this far through is just so amazing and we’re really proud of the culture and the team we’ve built up in Brisbane,” she said.

Fleming and Fejes await the completion of the Lucky Losers round to find out who they will match up against in the Round of 32.

Fellow Aussie women’s pair Kayla Mears and Tara Phillips finished their World Championship debut with a tough loss against Placette/Richard of France.

While Fleming/Fejes await their next match up, Paris Olympians Mark Nicolaidis and Izac Carracher already know their path to World Championships glory.

Wednesday night, on Centre court, they’ll face Germans Pfretzschner, L./Winter – the winner moving through to the next round of the competition, the Round of 16.

  • 8:00pm ACDT – Nicolaidis/Carracher (AUS) v Pfretzschner, L./Winter (GER)

Every Australian match will be broadcast live and free on SBS Viceland and SBS On Demand, with tickets and hospitality available via Ticketek.
